The Rocket City Trash Pandas have a new leader for the 2026 season: Joe Kruzel, a seasoned baseball coach with over three decades of experience. Kruzel's appointment marks a significant moment in the franchise's history, as he becomes the third manager in its history. His primary goal is to foster player development and guide the team towards playoff success.
Kruzel brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record to Huntsville. He joins the Trash Pandas after a successful four-year stint as the Los Angeles Angels' field coordinator, where he oversaw player development and set high standards across the organization's minor league system. This role will be his fifth year in the Angels organization, showcasing his dedication and expertise in the field.
'I'm thrilled to be back in the dugout,' Kruzel expressed. 'My focus is on helping players reach their full potential and contributing to the Angels' success while establishing a winning culture in Rocket City. We aim to play championship-caliber baseball, get the Trash Pandas back into the playoffs, and create an environment where players excel both on and off the field.'
Kruzel's managerial experience is extensive, with nine years as a professional manager, including eight years in affiliated baseball. His career record stands at 473-472, and he most recently managed the Double A Springfield team in the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 2019. Kruzel's journey began in the Cincinnati Reds organization, where he worked as a hitting coach and manager at the rookie level. Before transitioning to professional baseball, he spent 15 seasons at the University of Toledo, including 10 years as head coach, earning the Mid American Conference Coach of the Year award in 1999.
Kruzel's impact on the game has been recognized through inductions into the Toledo City Athletic League Hall of Fame and the Toledo Central Catholic High School Hall of Fame. At the professional level, he led the State College Spikes to five consecutive winning seasons and guided teams in Peoria to postseason appearances in back-to-back years.
The Trash Pandas' managerial history began with Jay Bell in 2021, followed by Andy Schatzley, who led the club from 2022 to 2025 before being promoted to infield coach with the Los Angeles Angels. Kruzel's appointment is a strategic move to build upon the team's success and shape the franchise's future.
