Māliko Bay, a hidden gem nestled amidst Maui's rugged north shore, is a place of deep significance and utility. This narrow bay, often overlooked by casual observers, has played a pivotal role in the lives of boaters, fishers, and first responders for generations. Its importance extends beyond its picturesque setting, as it serves as a critical access point for emergency services and a cultural hub for the community.
The story of Māliko Bay is one of resilience and revival. Built in the 1970s, the boat ramp at Māliko Bay was granted public access through an easement that expired in 1997. Since then, the site has suffered from neglect and illegal dumping, with the recent Kona low storms causing significant damage to the ramp.
However, a dedicated group of individuals, led by longtime fisher and ramp user Ben Walin, is determined to restore Māliko Bay to its former glory. Walin, along with the newly formed nonprofit organization Nā Maka o Māliko, has taken on the task of managing the bay and its surrounding 11-plus acres under a 50-year lease. Their mission is not just about physical restoration but also about preserving the cultural heritage and stories associated with this special place.
"Māliko Bay is part of our heritage," says Nā Maka o Māliko president Pulama Collier. "It's the stories we hold dear, the memories we cherish. Our motto, 'E ho'i i ka nani i Māliko,' translates to 'Let glory return to Māliko,' and that's exactly what we aim to do."
The group's ambitious effort is estimated to cost around $1 million, with the County of Maui already contributing a $15,000 grant for cleanup this year. Nā Maka o Māliko is also reaching out to the community, asking for help in fixing the facility they consider an integral part of their legacy.
"It's our duty to breathe new life into Māliko Bay," Collier adds. "We feel its pain, its degradation. We want to restore its vitality and ensure it continues to serve our community for generations to come."
