Namal Rajapaksa: Government 'Digging Its Own Pit' - Sri Lanka Political Crisis Explained (2026)

In a bold statement that resonates with many, Namal Rajapaksa, the National Organiser for the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and a Member of Parliament, declared today that the government is essentially "digging its own grave." He emphasized that part of the opposition's responsibility is to exert pressure on the current administration to ensure it at least makes strides towards fulfilling the commitments made to its citizens.

Speaking at a media event in Seenigama, MP Rajapaksa highlighted that the SLPP has been actively engaged in various promotional and political efforts over the last year, particularly during a time that has proven to be exceptionally challenging for the populace.

He pointed out that many citizens have suffered significantly due to what he termed "unbearable taxes" imposed since the National People’s Power (NPP) government took office, along with the impact of multiple natural disasters. According to Rajapaksa, the government's slow response in critical situations has led to unnecessary loss of life, and it has also fallen short in delivering on crucial promises made to the public.

“Numerous individuals had no choice but to ring in the New Year from safety centers and temporary camps, living in uncertainty about their futures and the status of their homes,” said MP Rajapaksa. He reminded everyone that the President had pledged to provide compensation to those impacted by these calamities.

He strongly urged the government to prioritize the disbursement of compensation and take swift action to help displaced families return to their residences. "While the government may overlook the initiatives undertaken by opposition parties, it is essential that they uphold the commitments they made to the people," he asserted.

“As members of the SLPP, we remain steadfast in our commitment to fulfill our responsibilities,” added MP Rajapaksa.
