Unveiling Liverpool University's Architectural Marvel: A Journey into the New School of Architecture
A Visionary Project Unveiled!
The highly anticipated School of Architecture at Liverpool University has nearly reached completion, and its first images are creating quite a buzz. This ambitious project, which welcomed its inaugural batch of students last month, is a testament to architectural innovation and educational excellence.
The Heart of the Campus
The new school boasts a stunning three-story extension, spanning approximately 3,000m², strategically built on a former car park. This extension seamlessly integrates with a remodelled section of the existing school, creating a vibrant and modern learning environment. The ongoing work includes revamping the historic Leverhulme Building, designed by Charles Reilly in the 1930s and later refurbished by King and McAllister in the 1980s, as well as the adjacent Georgian residential terrace.
A Unanimous Choice: O'Donnell + Tuomey
In 2019, after a rigorous two-stage selection process involving undergraduates, postgraduates, faculty members, and the estates department, the Irish architectural practice O'Donnell + Tuomey was unanimously chosen for this prestigious project. The judging panel, chaired by renowned architecture critic Kenneth Frampton, included Tate director Maria Balshaw and the late architect Michael Wilford. The competition was fierce, with a longlist of 18 practices narrowed down to just six for the final judging day. Other notable practices in the running included 6a architects, Eric Parry Architects, Carmody Groarke, Haworth Tompkins, and Grafton Architects.
A 'Major Milestone' for Liverpool University
Marco Iuliano, an architecture professor at the school and the mastermind behind the original competition, described the opening of the new building as a 'major milestone'. He highlighted the unique challenges and opportunities in architecture today, such as standardisation, procurement, and financial constraints. Despite these challenges, Liverpool University and O'Donnell + Tuomey have collaborated to create a space of exceptional architectural quality, staying true to the competition's ambition.
Iuliano further emphasised the significance of student and staff involvement throughout the entire process, stating, 'The educational side has been a crucial component of the entire challenge. It has been a constant workshop, and I can't think of anything comparable anywhere in architectural education.'
A Multi-Purpose Extension
The extension is a masterpiece of functional design, incorporating overlapping studios, exhibition spaces, teaching areas, offices, and even a café. This versatile layout ensures a dynamic and engaging learning experience for students. The project received approval from Liverpool City Council in 2022, solidifying its place as a landmark development in the city's architectural landscape.
A Public Showcase: AJ Small Projects 2026 Award
Excitingly, the new architecture school will host the AJ Small Projects 2026 Award at the end of April, marking the first time the public will have access to the new extension. The AJ will soon reveal more details about this event, offering an exclusive glimpse into the world of architectural excellence at Liverpool University.
