A painful, last-gasp defeat for the Lions as Newcastle Red Bulls snatch a 14-10 win in the EPCR Challenge Cup in Newcastle upon Tyne on Saturday night.
The Lions looked dominant for most of the match, only to be undone by a late breakthrough from the Red Bulls. Murray McCallum, a prop for Newcastle, crossed in the 79th minute to flip the scoreboard and give his side the lead for the first time.
The action began with an early highlight for the Lions when winger Angelo Davids intercepted and sprinted in for a try. Newcastle replied in kind through centre Alex Hearle in the 13th minute, setting up a tight contest.
Sam Francis put the Lions in front with a 20th-minute penalty, sending the teams into the break with the visitors holding a slim 10-7 advantage.
The second half intensified, with both sides exchanging momentum in a bruising, defensive game. The Red Bulls pressed hard late in the match, seeking another score rather than settling for penalties.
A pivotal moment came in the 67th minute when Newcastle fullback Boeta Chamberlain missed an easy kick to level proceedings, after which the Red Bulls continued to probe the Lions’ line.
Despite stout defending from the Lions, the dam eventually cracked near the end as Newcastle found the elusive score to clinch the victory.
