Elon Musk calls for abolishing the European Union after a €120 million (£105 million) transparency fine on X, his social platform, sparking a heated debate about regulation and free expression. He argues that sovereignty should return to individual nations so governments can better represent their people. In response to the fine, Musk criticized the EU on X, calling the decision “bulls**t” in replies to a European Commission post.
The penalty follows a two-year probe under the Digital Services Act (DSA), which pushes online platforms to curb illegal and harmful content. In a related development, TikTok faced potential charges in May for not meeting a DSA rule requiring an advertisement repository to help detect scams. European Commission tech chief Henna Virkkunen described X’s fine as proportionate and tied to the nature, gravity, and duration of the infringements. She emphasized that enforcement is about ensuring compliance with digital rules rather than imposing the highest possible fines.
The reactions extended beyond Europe. U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, criticized the fine, framing it as a broader challenge to American tech. Rubio framed it as an attack on U.S. platforms and the American public, while Carr suggested Europe is punishing a successful U.S. company for its own success. Meta and TikTok have also faced DSA transparency investigations, and Temu has been accused of enabling illegal sales.
X now has a window—between 60 and 90 working days, depending on the issue—to implement measures to comply with the DSA. Ahead of the ruling, political figures floated different interpretations, with some critics arguing the EU is overreaching while supporters stress the need for transparency and user protection.
The Commission found three violations: the manipulation of verification badges, lack of clarity about advertisers and their promotions, and restricted access to data that researchers should be able to audit. Musk characterized the EU action as targeting him personally, suggesting a broader confrontation with European governance.
