New Tool Unveiled to Monitor Prescription Drug Sales
The Ministry of Health has introduced an innovative online platform for the declaration of batch numbers for all health products, whether imported, exported, or locally manufactured. This initiative, announced by Health CS Aden Duale on December 23, marks a significant step in the government's efforts to combat the illegal sale of prescription medicines.
The system, set to launch on January 1, 2026, will enforce mandatory batch declaration, allowing the government to closely monitor the movement and sale of prescription drugs. This move aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the pharmaceutical sector.
In addition to this, the Ministry has developed the Track and Authentication Standard for Health Products and Technologies, a cutting-edge solution designed to improve traceability, accountability, and visibility across the entire pharmaceutical supply chain. This technology promises to be a game-changer in the fight against unauthorized prescription drug sales.
As part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts, CS Duale revealed that they are conducting comprehensive inspections of licensed wholesalers in the Nairobi Region, preparing for the 2026 licensing cycle. Non-compliant practitioners are referred to the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee (EDC) for regulatory action, with potential sanctions including suspension or revocation of practicing licenses. Over 10 practitioners have already faced disciplinary proceedings.
The EDC Board, appointed on November 7, is set to become fully operational in January 2026, ready to address pending cases and refer non-compliant practitioners for appropriate action. The Ministry is also working on scheduling medicines, making this information accessible to the public.
Furthermore, the Ministry is committed to enhancing regulatory clarity, supporting practitioner compliance, and strengthening enforcement actions. They have authorized the recruitment of additional regulatory staff to boost inspection coverage and enforcement at retail pharmacies. Public education initiatives are also underway to raise awareness about the risks of using prescription medicines without proper medical authorization.
These measures demonstrate the Ministry's dedication to ensuring the safety and efficacy of prescription drugs, safeguarding public health, and combating unauthorized sales.
