The newly promoted teams seem to have taken this lesson to heart. A significant reason for their surprisingly strong start to the season is their strategic recruitment of physically dominant players. For the majority of the first half at Elland Road, Aston Villa struggled to cope with Leeds' relentless aggression. If Leeds had combined that ferocity with a touch more finesse and tactical awareness, they might have effectively sealed the victory before Villa finally found their footing in the closing minutes of the first half. And this is the part most people miss: Maintaining that level of intensity for the entire match is incredibly difficult.
Leeds' primary threat in the first half came from set-piece situations, particularly those orchestrated by Sean Longstaff's precise right foot. It was his free-kick that led to the opening goal after just eight minutes. The goal itself was somewhat chaotic, and Villa players protested, arguing that Emi Martínez was unfairly impeded. Nmecha found himself increasingly isolated up front, with the midfield struggling to provide adequate support. This shift in momentum allowed Villa to gain more possession and, with less pressure, they began to utilize the ball more effectively. Rogers and Ollie Watkins had been relatively quiet until the 40th minute but offered a glimpse of their potential with Watkins narrowly missing the target with a curling effort.
